Insight One:

Knowing Your History…

While the French may have started it all with their cravats in the 17th century, it was us Italians who took this modest neckwear and turned it into an art form.

In particular, here by the serene shores of Lake Como, we refined the craft, ensuring each tie actually means something (as you’ll discover in the rest of this guide).

It was in the 1950s that Italian designers had truly transformed the necktie into the fashion icon it is today. The tie shot from “basic staple of a suit” to a diverse and stylish accessory that could be chopped & changed to fit different scenarios and a variety of outfits.

Just as Italian suits were emerging as slimmer, more lightweight alternatives to the traditional British and American styles, the Italian tie industry began booming too.

Often called “the revival” period of Italian fashion, the 1950s saw the first display of new, dazzling tie patterns and colors to match the equally exploratory suits that were being produced from Milan to Naples.

It was then that the American love affair with Italian accessories began, with Italy becoming the biggest European exporter of textiles to the United States.

This wave of stylistic Italian ties was, in part, responsible for the multi-colored splash of the 60s’ new styles.

The position of “the land of the tie” has remained with Italy ever since.

From the world’s leading businessmen to the young trendsetters of the next generation, everyone wants the best… So they buy Italian.

Insight Two:

The 3 Components of a Great Tie…

Alright, here’s the inside scoop. A great tie, my dear friends, is all about three things: material, craftsmanship, and design.

Silk, Silk, Silk:

Need I sing its praises more? Silk is not only luxurious and soft to the touch, it’s also one of the most versatile fabrics for a tie. It drapes elegantly, resists wrinkles, and adapts effortlessly across seasons. Whether in the chill of winter or the heat of summer, silk maintains its sophisticated, polished look.

At Elizabetta, we only use 100% Italian silk, sourced from small, family-run mills in Como. Each tie is crafted from one of several distinctive silk weaves:

Madder Schappe Silk Saglione:a matte, powdery finish that gives a vintage elegance.

Grenadine Garza Fina:an open-weave texture with subtle depth and breathability.

Silk Twill:a durable, smooth weave with a rich, heavy drape.

Silk Jacquard:intricately woven patterns that shimmer and catch the light.

Stitching & Lining:

Quality ties are constructed with a wool lining that helps them maintain their shape and resist wrinkles.

The stitching on cheaper, machine-made ties is more prone to breakage, as the mechanical stitches are much tighter. This also causes them to look stiff.

Hand-sewn ties, like the kind Elizabetta makes, have hidden stitching that has more give. This prevents the seam from ripping when it’s being securely tied around the neck, and allows the tie to return to its original shape effortlessly.

It’s these nuances that ensure your tie remains as stunning as the day you bought it, even after countless wears and admirations.

Designs That Speak:

Quality ties have a one of a kind pattern that cannot be replicated. They’re thoughtfully designed to be timeless.

Cheap ties, on the other hand, have patterns that are poorly planned, machine made, and tacky.

Choose patterns that reflect who you are (or who you’d like to be).

Because nothing says “suave” like a well-chosen tie – and nothing says "knowledgeable" like wearing it in the right situations. (We’ll come to that soon!)

Insight Three:

Picking in a Hurry? Here’s the Quickguide to Choosing the Right Tie…

Whether you’re closing a business deal, attending a wedding, or just enjoying a casual day, a tie sets the tone and has the potential to tell a story.

Here’s how I recommend you choose based on a few common scenarios…

Business Sense:

Solid colors or classic stripes mean business.

They’ve been the go-to for power brokers, world leaders, and entrepreneurs since the tie became a fashion staple.

Trust me, you’ll own the room with a simple yet authoritative one or two-color tie.

Ensure you pick a darker color than the shirt you’re wearing and of course something that doesn’t clash with the colors of your outfit – blues and grays work particularly well for business.

Here are a few of my favorite picks:

Party Time:

It’s time to flirt with floral or paisley.

At weddings or celebratory evenings, these designs demonstrate a respect for the classic rules of tie-wearing while still showing your wild and adventurous side, embodying the festive feeling of an Italian festa.

These “event ties” as they’re often known encapsulate my love of what ties are all about. Bold design. Incredible attention to detail. A simple way to draw the eye.

Here are 5 I think everyone should have in their wardrobe:

Good for almost everything:

Not sure what to choose? Here’s your secret weapon: Grenadine ties combine the best of both worlds.

A mix of sophistication and playfulness that is equally at home in a casual or professional setting.

Perfect for weekend adventures or a relaxed day at the office, they convey an Italian sense of sprezzatura (effortless style that people can’t help but love).

At Elizabetta, Grenadine ties are one of our specialities, originating right here around Lake Como. In fact, later on, I’d love to share a deeper insight into these wonderful accessories and why you should consider making them your new best friend.

In the meantime though, here are a few that I personally adore:

Part 2: The Advanced Decisions

Bene! You now know more than most!

But we can go much further. Let’s talk about the areas of tie knowledge that will take you from “tie-fan” to “tie-aficionado”!

Starting with a deeper look at what each pattern really means…

Insight Four:

How to Choose the Right Pattern…

Every pattern has a personality, but it can be hard to know what they all mean.

So here’s my secret cheat sheet:

Handmade Italian Burgundy Floral Silk Tie

Floral:

For celebratory events – especially the likes of Spring gatherings or Summer garden parties – a floral tie is the perfect companion.

Geometric:

Modern, edgy, and often a tad mysterious, geometric ties are best suited to sleek cocktail parties or more casual business settings. These ties project confidence and a taste for the finer details.

Paisley:

A nod to the classics, with just enough pizzazz. From the Renaissance to the Beatles, paisleys carry a rich cultural heritage. If floral isn’t quite your style, why not try paisley at more formal gatherings and events?

Grey Polka Dot Italian Handmade Silk Tie

Polka Dot:

Who doesn’t love a bit of playful whimsy? Channeling the charm of the 1920s, a polka dot tie brings out your inner Gatsby, ideal for adding cheeky elegance to both everyday outfits or semi-formal events.

Solid Color:

Sometimes, simple is best. Extremely versatile, solid ties are like a blank canvas that can be made to fit any outfit. From sharp suits to casual blazers, from business meetings to weddings, you can’t go wrong with a solid color.

Italian Blue and Lavender Striped Silk Tie

Stripes:

Bold, assertive, and undeniably classic. Stripes have been a staple since the days of European royalty and stylish military uniforms. They’re perfect for making a statement of confidence in any professional setting.

Insight Five:

What Your Knot Says About You…

I need to say something that often goes ignored: A well-tied knot can elevate your entire look.

Yes, it may seem simple, even inconsequential, but believe me… knot-tying is anything but. What’s the use in having a stunning tie if a sloppy knot is drawing all the attention?

That’s why there are three key knots I suggest you learn.

Four-in-Hand Knot:

The everyday hero of knots. Slightly asymmetrical and easy to master, it’s perfect for most everyday occasions when you want to look good without fuss. If you’re heading to a more casual event or outing, then the four-in-hand is your best pick.

Half Windsor:

Think of this as the “Goldilocks” knot, – not too big, not too small – but well balanced and suitable for both semi-formal and formal events. It works beautifully with most collar styles and is perfect for interviews or business meetings.

Full Windsor:

The big, bold knot – an undeniable statement of confidence. Great for formal events, weddings, or anytime you’re wearing a wider-spread collar. It’s symmetrical, impressive, and always commands attention. Save this knot for special occasions.

Insight Six:

The Meaning Behind Color…

Much like the pattern of your tie, color isn’t necessarily about “matching” the rest of your outfit; it’s about making a statement of your choice. Picking the right hue can elevate your entire look and set the tone for the occasion.

Here’s what I believe your tie color says about the message you want to convey…

Red:

Power, passion, and confidence. Perfect for bold business meetings or romantic dinners when you want to make a memorable impression.

Blue:

Trust, calm, and professionalism. The most versatile color, suitable for everything from job interviews to weekend brunches.

Gray and Charcoal:

Understated, refined, and sophisticated. Easy to mix and match, they’re your go-to for almost anything (though beware of gray-on-gray clashes!)

Purple:

Regal, creative, and elegant. Perfect for tackling formal occasions with a touch of personality.

Brown & Earth Tones:

Warm and approachable. These are great for less formal settings, weekend outings, or when you want to add some Italian warmth to your look.

Pro tip:

If you’re a fan of bright-colored ties, try to pair them with neutral shirts (like white or light blue) so they can stand out naturally while still maintaining a balanced, elegant look.

Insight Seven:

Mastering Your New Secret Weapon…

I promised I’d tell you more about Grenadine ties, the Italian classic with a textured twist.

Well, here’s exactly why I love them so much...

If you’re a lover of authentic Italian fashion, then these ties need to be high on your list.

Grenadines are a perfect example of Italian craftsmanship, with a weave unlike any other. Originating right here from the sun-drenched shores of Lake Como, grenadine ties boast a distinctive, textured fabric that sets them apart from your typical silk.

They’re both elegant and versatile, making them a staple in your wardrobe, whether you’re heading to a sophisticated brunch or a relaxed evening out.

Best of all, I see them far too infrequently, so they’re a perfect way to stand out while still wearing something that everyone is going to love.

What makes the grenadine so special?

The Italian name “garza inglese” or "English gauze" actually refers to the type of weave – an open, gauze-like, slightly textured fabric created on ancient looms.

Even though many modern gauze weaves exist, true grenadine fabric is only made in two mills in the world, both in Como (we work with both).

Unlike a smooth satin or a heavily patterned tie, the grenadine’s weave gives it a rich, matte finish with just enough texture to add interest. It’s light and breathable, making it a favorite for spring and summer, but it’s also timeless enough to wear all year round.

When should you wear a grenadine tie?

Because of its textured and slightly casual look, a grenadine tie strikes the perfect balance between formal and casual. It’s ideal for business meetings when you want to convey confidence without appearing too stiff, and it works beautifully at semi-formal weddings or social events when you wish to stand out subtly.

The open weave pattern also ensures it looks relaxed yet refined. In simple terms, it’s a way to look effortlessly stylish.

How to style a grenadine tie?

Pair it with a crisp white shirt and a well-tailored navy or gray suit – this is the traditional Italian way to exude elegance.

Or, for a more modern look, try it with linen blazers and light-colored trousers in warm weather. If you’re feeling bold, a patterned shirt or even a soft pastel can work well, as the textured fabric adds visual depth.

What’s the best knot for a grenadine?

A simple four-in-hand or half-Windsor works perfectly, especially if you want to preserve the tie’s textured look. These choices are tight enough to look sharp but not so tight as to flatten its charm.

So, if you’re looking for a timeless look that will immediately set you apart, take a look at our selection of authentic grenadine ties.

Some Closing Thoughts…

The art of choosing the right tie isn’t just about what’s currently trendy, it’s about personal expression.

A well-chosen tie communicates confidence, style, and a slice of your personality. Remember, every tie tells a story, whether it’s represented by a classic stripe, a playful floral, or a textured grenadine.

Great style is timeless, much like the Italian-crafted ties that have been perfected over centuries. And at Elizabetta, we’re proud to carry that legacy in every silk tie we create.

So, experiment, have fun, and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through your knots and colors. With a little practice and a sense of Italian flair, you’ll be tying your way into endless compliments.
